Weight Loss for Beginners

Losing weight need not be difficult, although many people will tell you otherwise. There are so many different diets, books, programmes, magazines and adverts out there, including a multitude of quick fixes and fads, no wonder most people find the prospect of losing weight very daunting, even depressing. The sad truth is that most diets do fail. Why? Unfortunately there are as many reasons as there are diets, but there is one underlying truth about losing weight that underpins everything. The philosophy is very simple; to lose weight you need to eat fewer calories each day than your body uses up. A calorie can be defined as a unit of energy and the body needs a certain amount of fuel or energy each day just to function. If you consume more calories than you use, you gain weight. That's it. If you want to lose weight you can begin right here by following this very simple guide, which will help put you on the road to success.

Begin by setting yourself small, realistic targets. Focus on what you have to lose this week not this year. This is very important. If you have a target weight in mind that is a long way down the scale from where you are now, concentrating on that goal alone is enough to put you off even before you start. Breaking your desired weight loss down into sections so that you have a weekly target allows you to have an achievable goal each and every week. There is absolutely no point in setting yourself unrealistic weekly goals; you're destined to fail. A realistic, achievable and safe weight loss each week, for most people, is somewhere in the region of 1 to 2 lbs.

Let us suppose that you want to lose 2 lbs a week. What we need to do now is work out how many calories you need each day in order to achieve this. You can do this by identifying how many calories you are using at the moment, and then make sure you get just 500 less than that. Do not guess. Your body is used to having a certain amount of energy every day so if you drastically and suddenly reduce this amount then you are likely to feel drained and exhausted; prone to mood swings, food cravings and binges, and ultimately to give up. Sticking to 500 calories a day less than what you normally eat, ensures a regular, steady weight loss that will leave you feeling empowered, more energetic, healthier and indeed, happier.

An average adult male needs around 2500 calories a day just to live, and the average woman, 2000, but what about you? How do you work out how many calories your body needs each day? You can visit http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalalc.htm where you will find a very simple, calories per day calculator for adults. By putting in your height, age, sex, current weight, and activity level, you can find out how many calories your body is likely to need each day just to maintain your current weight. For example, I put in the following information: Height - 6ft, current weight - 182 lbs (13st 3lbs), Age - 32, Sex - Male, Activity Level - very active. The number of calories per day that my body needs to maintain my current weight is 3224.

But you want to lose weight, so you need to consume 500 calories less than what you are using at the moment. You must put your body into negative calorie balance otherwise your weight will stay the same. Similarly, if you put yourself into a positive calorie balance by consuming more calories than your body needs to use, then you will gain weight. It's really very simple.

So you have made the decision to lose weight. You have set yourself a realistic target of around 2 lbs per week. You have worked out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight and subtracted 500 from that in order to find out how many calories you need to eat each day. All you need to do now is calculate those calories and you are on your way.

How are you going to work out how many calories there are in the foods you are eating each day? This need not be a tiresome task; in fact it can be a rewarding adventure. What you learn now will stay with you for life and help you to make better choices regarding your eating habits in the future. You will need to educate yourself on what foods and snacks are high in calories, which ones are low in calories and even what free foods are available that contain little or no calories at all. Fortunately most food packaging contains nutritional information on the label, including how many calories they contain. The rest is up to you; you have nothing to lose, except the weight of course.

The Key Steps to Losing Weight

Weight loss really needs time, effort, and determination. Two types of methods are generally practiced when you want to lose weight is through natural and surgical process. The natural process has more positive comments because it is non-invasive. It has little or no side effects compared to the surgical process.

In the steps to losing weight, diet and exercise are always involved. Diet is very important because it controls the things that enter our system. Fats and oils should be eliminated from the diet because these contribute fats and will not do your body any good. In fact, a diet rich in fats and oils increase your risks of having stroke, heart attack, and other heart-related problems. Diabetes is also a problem for people on the heavier side because of their increased sugar intake. When you are aiming to lose weight, it is often necessary that you follow a diet plan in order to keep you on track. Diet plans help you stick with the right foods to help you lose weight. When you are choosing a diet plan, choose those that still have the major food groups like fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. These are the necessary nutrients to keep your body going. When buying foods, you should make it a point to read the label. This allows you to see how much of a particular nutrient is available on that food. Replacing your snacks with nutritious foods is very helpful with weight loss. Fruits and whole grains are great snacks because they are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These are good for the body, helpful with digestion, and low in calories. They also make you feel full longer, decreasing your tendency to eat often. It is also recommended that you eat small servings of foods several times in a day to maintain your metabolic rate. Meal skipping should be avoided because this would just lead to eating large amounts food on your next meal and this will not help with your weight loss. Often, slow weight loss is experienced by people who changed their food consumption abruptly. This happens because the body has learned to adjust to the new calorie supply.

Replacing sodas with water would be very helpful because the former contains high levels of sugar. Also, being on a diet does not mean that you cannot enjoy flavourful dishes. There are a lot of diet foods that are very full in flavour and are enjoyable to eat. You should also allow yourself to let lose once in a while and eat the foods that you are craving for. This is not a bad idea because it prevents you from binge eating and cheating on your diet. It also serves as your reward for the all the dieting that you have been doing. Exercising is also needed to tone your muscles and to burn your fat. This keeps your body fit and ready for any situations that may come your way. Also, keeping your body healthy will make your mind healthy.

Do You Lose More Weight When Exercising On An Empty Stomach?

Today I would like to talk about when is the best time to exercise for maximum weight loss. While the type of exercise, the intensity and duration is important with respect to weight loss, the time of exercise is equally as important - if not more so.

Timing your workout can be crucial. There are specific times during the day during which your body burns fat most efficiently. It has to do with your eating cycle - or more accurately with your body's digestive cycle. The body burns more fat when you exercise on a relatively empty stomach - contrary to many claims out there that state otherwise. The longer you wait to exercise after a meal the more fat your body will burn.

Is that truth or myth?

A university researcher studied the effects of exercising on a full versus an empty stomach. A group of women participated in 2 exercise studies. In one they exercised twice before meals and in the other, after meals. Evidence showed that when the subjects exercised on an empty stomach (before meals), blood glucose levels were lower in the periods following meals and during the night, than the when they exercised on a full stomach (after meals).

This suggested that exercising before meals can help to regulate blood glucose levels almost as well as 2 popular glucose-lowering drugs. (1)

To take it one step further, since this type of exercise method lowers blood glucose, lower amounts of glucose may translate to decreases in body fat. Remember excess glucose in the blood (from carbohydrate) may be stored as fat.

This study, it seems, supports the widely popular theory that the best time to exercise for fat loss, is on an empty stomach. A theory which many claim is only a myth.

I decided to put this theory to the test.

I am well into my thirties now, and I find it more difficult too keep the pounds off these days (with everything being constant). In other words, I am not eating more calories than I did 10-15 years ago and I'm also not exercising any less. And yet I had put on an extra 12 pounds. By the way, I also have a slow metabolism.

So, I wanted to see if there would be a significant difference when I exercised before breakfast instead of 2-3 hours after dinner which is what I had been doing. My workout was exactly the same, I didn't change anything. I jogged for 30 minutes and followed that by 15 minutes of high intensity interval training.

The results were shocking. I lost 11 pounds in four and a half weeks - that was extra weight around the mid-section that I was carrying around for quite some time.

In truth, however, I am not really a morning person and find that my body has a hard time waking up for a workout first thing in the morning. If you're not a morning person, you'll know what I mean.

So I am going to experiment by switching my workout period to first just before lunch and then just before dinner (on a fairly empty stomach). I'll let you know what the results will be. I have a feeling they'll still be more favorable with respect to weight loss than when workouts are conducted after meals.

It's the Kind of Carbs That Count for Weight Loss

Massachusetts researchers found that the type of carbohydrate and not the amount consumed is linked to obesity. The year-long study found that participants who ate more refined carbohydrates (white flour products, white sugar, and starchy vegetables such as white potatoes) were significantly heavier than those participants who consumed low-glycemic foods such as whole grains, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables.

Glycemic Index or GI is the measure of the rate carbohydrates in food are digested before appearing in the blood as glucose or blood sugar. Glycemic load or GL refers to a measurement of carbohydrates in a meal. In practice, each measurement is used to describe the quantity and quality of carbohydrates in a diet or particular meal.

There are tremendous benefits to consistently selecting the right kinds of carbs. Here are a few: 1) You will burn more body fat, 2) You will enjoy higher energy levels, 3) You will be able to eliminate cravings and binges, and 4) You will be able to either reduce or eliminate the risk of diabetes.

Low-glycemic carbohydrates do not result in as rapid an increase in blood sugar levels. This is critically important to anyone trying to lose weight. Why? Because when you consume certain carbohydrate foods, there is a spike in blood sugar levels in response to the resulting elevated glucose present in the bloodstream. Due to these high glucose levels, the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone responsible for bringing the glucose levels down to a stable level. Again, it is secreted by the pancreas in response to elevated blood sugar (glucose).

The high blood sugar alerts the pancreas of the excess glucose and releases the hormone messenger, insulin, which lowers the high blood sugar by shifting the metabolism into fat storage mode. Insulin turns the extra glucose into glycogen and removes it from the blood and stores it in the liver and muscles. But, the excess sugar that can't be stored will be converted to new fat and stored in adipose tissue (buttocks, hips, and back). Insulin is crucial to life in proper amounts, but can be very bad in excessive amounts.

The problem is that three in four U.S. adults produce too much of this hormone, insulin, simply because they eat diets too high in carbohydrates. Insulin's major role is to keep blood sugar within a fairly narrow range.

Through the day however, blood sugar rises and falls. When it does, the system is thrust into motion to return it to this stable range. It is helpful to think of insulin as a kind of chemical messenger able to "talk" with various tissues in the body that have built-in receptors on their surfaces. These receptors are present on the surfaces of the following types of cells: liver, fat cells, muscles, as well as the kidneys. Additionally, these receptors are present in the centers of the brain that control appetite. As a consequence, insulin commands the body to save food energy stored in fat cells for a time when there may not be food available.

This is one of those great features of evolutionary biology that served humans well when some where living in caves, but in the modern world, it is not such a great adaptation for the over 300 million who struggle with overweight and obesity today.

When we overindulge in high glycemic carbohydrates, the hormone insulin converts the extra glucose present in the blood into blood fat or triglycerides. These are in turn are stored in the fat cells. When this occurs, the body experiences a dramatic drop in glucose levels known as hypoglycemia. This hypoglycemia results in the release of another hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is believed to increase fat storage, cause the breakdown of lean muscle, and even may kill brain cells.

There has been recent research that suggests a sudden rise in blood sugar associated with a high glycemic load may increase free radical production and risk of cell damage. We know of a relationship between increased free radical production and accelerated aging, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Researchers have concluded that long-term consumption of high-GI foods may lead to high-oxidative stress. A lower-glycemic index diet, "not" a low carbohydrate diet, appears to be beneficial in both weight loss and oxidative stress.

If you can control your blood sugar, you can also transform your body into a fat-burning machine from a fat-storing machine. There are two practical steps you may want to take immediately: First, I begin on a transition away from refined carbohydrates and 'white' products toward whole grains. Secondly, get into the habit of combining whole grains (not carbs) with essential oils or fats or a protein source in meals.

When carbs and proteins are eaten in the same meal, another hormone, Glucagon, is produced. Glucagon, like insulin, is produced to maintain stable blood sugar levels. However, an even more important role for Glucagon is to burn stored fat.

Pay attention to the kinds of carbs you eat. I suggest you simply limit any foods with added sugar (soda, candy, bread, beer, yogurt, ketchup). The best ones are those with a low-glycemic load. In other words, the ones that are digested more slowly and therefore result in a more stable appetite.

Finally, a lower-glycemic index diet, "not" a low carbohydrate diet, appears to be beneficial in both weight loss and oxidative stress. Make the shift from traditional carbs to whole grains and watch your weight come down and your health go up.

Winning the Battle Against Hypertension

There has been growing concern over the problem of high blood pressure or hypertension over the recent decades. A major shift in the lifestyle of our generation has greatly increased the incidences of hypertension among adults, young adults and even adolescents!

Hypertension is one of the medical conditions that are classified as "silent killers". There are very few initial symptoms which you normally confuse with the common headache or fatigue. If left unchecked and untreated, hypertension can lead to more serious and life-threatening diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and a host of other organ-damaging conditions that can attack the human body.

The cases of hypertension have increased alarmingly. Younger folks are beginning to get it and some adolescents unknowingly have these conditions, too. It should be noted that this generation engages less and less in physical activities and obesity is on the rise due to the technological revolution. More of the young folks spend much of their time nowadays in front of a TV set or a computer rather than at the outdoors engaging in sports or other physical activities.

Much of the food we consume come from processed sources, which usually contain lots of sodium and fat which can contribute to the problem of hypertension. Added to that, we live in a toxic world of pressures and stresses, too much smoking, drinking and substance abuse which are all aggravating factors to the problem of hypertension.

We all need to seriously consider a lifestyle change if we are to address this silent killer. As much as we need to go back to natural sources for the food that we eat, we also need to take stock of our lifestyle and our priorities. Of course, medication is available to control our blood pressures, but taking on a better perspective on life will greatly increase our chances in fighting the battle against hypertension. More than food and medication, stress can be the number one cause of hypertension and high blood pressure. So we really need to work out a healthy combination of eating right, thinking right and living right to win the fight against this deadly lifestyle disease.
