Winning the Battle Against Hypertension

There has been growing concern over the problem of high blood pressure or hypertension over the recent decades. A major shift in the lifestyle of our generation has greatly increased the incidences of hypertension among adults, young adults and even adolescents!

Hypertension is one of the medical conditions that are classified as "silent killers". There are very few initial symptoms which you normally confuse with the common headache or fatigue. If left unchecked and untreated, hypertension can lead to more serious and life-threatening diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and a host of other organ-damaging conditions that can attack the human body.

The cases of hypertension have increased alarmingly. Younger folks are beginning to get it and some adolescents unknowingly have these conditions, too. It should be noted that this generation engages less and less in physical activities and obesity is on the rise due to the technological revolution. More of the young folks spend much of their time nowadays in front of a TV set or a computer rather than at the outdoors engaging in sports or other physical activities.

Much of the food we consume come from processed sources, which usually contain lots of sodium and fat which can contribute to the problem of hypertension. Added to that, we live in a toxic world of pressures and stresses, too much smoking, drinking and substance abuse which are all aggravating factors to the problem of hypertension.

We all need to seriously consider a lifestyle change if we are to address this silent killer. As much as we need to go back to natural sources for the food that we eat, we also need to take stock of our lifestyle and our priorities. Of course, medication is available to control our blood pressures, but taking on a better perspective on life will greatly increase our chances in fighting the battle against hypertension. More than food and medication, stress can be the number one cause of hypertension and high blood pressure. So we really need to work out a healthy combination of eating right, thinking right and living right to win the fight against this deadly lifestyle disease.
